On March 24th of 2022, “Zeus” a presumed 20 year old bay gelding, found his place at the Hooves n’ Hearts rescue facility. We had stumbled upon the ad his previous owner posted in a Facebook horse group. The ad had included pictures of a healthy, shiny, spirited gelding yet when we arrived early to the appointment made to see him, we were met with an emaciated horse in a pen. This wasn’t what we had expected at all. Our hearts fell to the ground and we then realized this horse needed to come home with us, we weren’t leaving without him. We had waited until the owner arrived to get permission to load Zeus into our trailer, but we were met with the question that had us in disbelief, we had been asked if we ran him in the round pen to see if we liked him. He was in no condition to do so, so when his owner arrived we had Zeus loaded in the trailer and had them sign away their rights to him. Once he was safe and sound at home, we were given the chance to evaluate him. His feet were in decent condition and his coat seemed healthy, but his ribs and hips were disturbingly visible and protruding. With his coming visit to Imperial County, we will have the chance to have the vets thoroughly examine Zeus. For the time being, he’ll receive all the love, feed, and attention he deserves. Would you like to be a part of and follow along in Zeus’s journey of recovery? Let us know!
Update: Zeus is now part of our herd and enjoys teaching people to ride in our lesson program!

Princess is a 15.3h bay thoroughbred mare. Princess came in May 2022. She came in as a stable mate to Dreamer. She was not as fortunate. She came in very lame. Completely unsound, with super long hooves. After consulting our farrier, we decided that the correction she needed would take time. Not wanting to take drastic measures, with the possibility of making things worst. So we began the process of correcting the out of shape hoof. Only to discover that she had stretched the tendon compensating for that foot. After several farrier visits, she began to walk more and more normal on the foot. As of today, December 2022, we haven’t ridden her yet. But she is willing to stand for hours getting attention. And is making great progress towards her soundness.
Once we feel that she is as good as she can be, we will start exercising her. She is now adopted out to a wonderful young lady.
Dreamer is a 15.3h sorrel Azteca mare. She arrived in May of 2022. Dreamer came from a personal surrender in Arizona. When she arrived, she was underweight and lacking in basic hoof care. It was said she had been ridden by her owner. After 60 days of Rehabilitation, and plenty of feed she began to improve. We began her on light exercise. She quickly showed us her abilities. As we began to ride her. We found out that she was nice trail horse and a willing partner.
In October of 2022 we found her forever home with a loving family that included a young lady that fell in love immediately. She is now happy and enjoying her recovery.
Pete was a 12 year old 15.3h buckskin Quarter horse gelding who was originally in a Texas killpen 2 years prior to him arriving at our rescue. Pete had been surrendered to us due to his owners health declining, she was unable to care for the horses any longer. Pete had severe laminitis and was under ideal weight, we had tried correcting it with help from our wonderful farrier and vet in the time that he was with us. Unfortunately, the time came to make a decision.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of Pete. He was a gentle giant. He was a barn favorite very quickly due to his kind and calm demeanor. He enjoyed being loved on and brushed by everyone who visited. The decision to lay Pete to rest was not made lightly.
When Pete was at his last farrier appointment, his laminitis was so severe at that point due to his neglect prior to arriving at Hooves ’N Hearts Rescue. He was not able to comfortably stand or move around for any length of time. He did have a few good days prior to his last farrier appointment. Even with all the treatments we had tried, he was having a very hard time and very uncomfortable. We decided to get another veterinary opinion, which concluded that his laminitis was too severe to make a recovery.
We apologize for this late post; it was very hard on us. Pete is now running and enjoying greener pastures. It’s hard to put into words how much Pete meant to us and how much this impacted us. Thank you to our wonderful Farrier and Vet who did everything they possibly could. We will continue to update on our other rescues here at the ranch.
Ranger is a 22yo 15.3/16h palomino APHA gelding. Ranger was surrendered to us from a family who was getting out of the horse world. He was a bit underweight, and needed some updated vet care. Ranger is a lovable giant, much like Pete was. He turned out to be a great riding horse under saddle, and is now enjoying big green pastures with his forever home here in SoCal.
Gucci was a 26 year old bay Quarter horse gelding, supposedly a rope horse in his younger years. He had a "G" brand on his left cheek. Gucci was a lesson horse after then, and surrendered to our rescue. He came in underweight, and with a limp. We later found out that he had previous injuries to his hip, shoulder and legs. It was a hard decision, we decided it was best to lay Gucci to rest as he was not comfortable just standing or walking, after corrective farrier work and vet care. He had a happy last day with us, surrounded by love.
Taylor is a 19 year old western pleasure bred black quarter horse mare, standing 14.3h. We have found that she was a western pleasure champion in her younger years, but ended that career due to a navicular diagnosis. Taylor came from the same lesson barn as Gucci. She was extremely emaciated when she arrived. When we had first seen Taylor, she wasn't interested in food at all due to her lack of weight as well as her cribbing. She quickly became a food lover over time, as well as turning out to be a wonderful horse overall who loves attention, and her buddy Ranger. The first day we started treating her navicular, she was turned out in the pasture and was running, kicking and bucking joyfully! She is feeling much better and packed weight on very quickly. She is now with a wonderful family in Northern California!

Please welcome Millie the mustang, our latest rescue! This 27-year-old mare was a bit reserved at first, but she quickly warmed up to her new surroundings and companions. After taking these photos, Millie received a thorough vet checkup and we fixed up her feet, floated her teeth, dewormed, vaccinated and more. However, she still needs some TLC to regain her weight and health, which we're determined to provide. Millie has a resilient spirit and a strong will to survive. If you'd like to contribute to Millie's recovery, please don't hesitate to send us a message to see how you can be part of her recovery! We're excited to share her progress, and you can be part of her journey too by sponsoring her or one of our other horses as well as donating. We all appreciate the constant love and support.
